Safety Warning as plans underway for new Loftus footpath bridge

ICL Boulby is working with Redcar and Cleveland over plans to replace a bridge over the rail line at Loftus which has been closed because of its dangerous condition.

The closure means that currently an order is in place prohibiting the public from using the Public Footpath from its junction with Water Lane to the junction with the Rose Cottage access track. Signed diversions are in operation warning the public not to attempt to cross.

Safety notices at the bridge site.

Explained ICL Boulby Engineering Project Manager James Hall “After the current wooden bridge was closed for repair a detailed inspection has shown that it is necessary to put in place a completely new structure and the work is likely to take between 12 to 18 months.

“We will keep local people updated as work progresses but, in the meantime, it is important to stress that no-one should attempt to cross the existing structure, especially as the middle section of the bridge has been removed.”

The new bridge, funded by ICL Boulby, will be of metal construction to ensure that it can make a long-lasting contribution to supporting the objectives of the Loftus regeneration project to develop the area as a centre for walking and cycling activities.
