Joshua Harland Awarded the Prestigious Paul Hogarth Bursary

The Paul Hogarth Bursary, established at ICL Boulby to support aspiring students, has been awarded to Joshua Harland, who will soon embark on his Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering at Newcastle University. This bursary, which aims to foster the next generation of talented engineers, is a testament to Joshua’s dedication in his quest for academic achievements and commitment to advancing sustainable infrastructure.

The Paul Hogarth Bursary was initiated in 2023 to honour the memory of Paul Hogarth, a respected figure in the mining and farming community noted for his contributions towards trialling and promoting the world’s first and only low carbon, organic fertiliser, Polysulphate, which is mined and refined at Boulby. Paul who uniquely not only mined the mineral but then used the finished product on his farm giving ICL vital information from his first field trials.

The first recipient of this bursary was Grace Fuller from Grosmont, who used the award to make significant strides in her studies for her Physics Degree at the University of Liverpool, currently Grace is undertaking her summer placement at the mine, working alongside scientist from the UK’s only Underground Laboratory.

Grace’s success of receiving an award for School Physicist of the year by the Ogden Trust, set a high standard for future recipients and highlighted the profound impact such support can have on an individual’s academic and professional journey.

Joshua’s selection continues the legacy of the bursary by recognising his potential to contribute meaningfully to the field of civil engineering. His upcoming studies at Newcastle University will be pivotal in equipping him with the advanced skills and knowledge necessary to address contemporary engineering challenges. The award not only alleviates the financial burden of higher education but also serves as a source of motivation for Joshua as he pursues his goal of creating innovative and sustainable engineering solutions.
