Boulby Rescue Team Aids with Critical Emergency Preparedness

In a display of community and commitment to safety, ICL Boulby Mine Rescue Team has lent its expertise to assist the Land of Iron mining museum. This collaboration comes as the museum’s oldest attraction, the North Drift, has recently received approval to reopen to the public. This green light follows extensive efforts by Boulby, alongside AmcoGiffen, TR Fabrication, and other partners, to ensure all necessary work was completed and the HSE’s stringent safety regulations were met. As a result, visitors can now safely explore the North Drift, reassured by the rigorous Safety measures that are now in place.

To reinforce these safety protocols, the Mines’ Rescue Team now conducts mock emergency drills at the museum. These exercises are designed to test and enhance the preparedness of staff, placing them under realistic pressure to respond effectively to emergency scenarios.

Andy Harvey, ICL Boulby and Teesdocks’ Safety Advisor, facilitates these drills with the collaboration of the Casualties Union and other dedicated volunteers. Andy emphasises the importance of these practices, stating, “The aim of rescue is to save lives and minimise further injury to people and damage to property. Emergency preparedness and planning are essential in managing unexpected crises and emergencies within the mining environment.”

Boulby and Teesdock sites are covered by two rescue teams, both of which engage in regular mock emergency training across various areas of the mine, including surface operations, underground sections, and tailings. These rigorous drills ensure that the teams are well-equipped and ready to devise and implement rapid rescue strategies during real emergencies.

The efforts of the Mine Rescue Team underline the critical importance of having a well-prepared rescue team to ensure the timely retrieval and safety of individuals under a range of difficult circumstances.
